About La Canonica di Camedo

Today’s La Canonica house was built in the 1950s, constructed upon a far older rustico stone structure which still forms the ground floor. The last priest who resided in La Canonica di Camedo was Don. Pietro Vaerini, who passed away in 2001. The house remained largely untouched until 2019, when it was transferred by the Diocese of Lugano, and refurbished as seen today.

In and around the village of Camedo

Camedo is a small village in the Locarno district of Ticino, situated in the beautiful Centovalli – which is Italian for “a hundred valleys”. It is the most westerly Swiss village in the valley, and sits on the border with Italy where it becomes Vigezzo valley.

Convenience and beauty in the FART railway

Centovalli is perhaps most famous for the spectacular train journey between Locarno and Domodossola. Operated by the FART (Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi) Camedo’s railway station is the final Swiss stop before entering Italy’s Vigezzo valley. The convenience is a fantastic benefit for Camedo visitors, making travelling to Locarno, Domodossola – and all villages between – far easier than in any other valley.

In addition, several times a year the ‘Treno Storico’ (‘Historic train’) from 1923 returns to the railway line, giving visitors the chance to experience travel of a century ago.
